The 1954 wing of the A.G. Gaston Motel is closed for renovation. Visit the Temporary Visitor Center in the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute at 520 16th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203 open Wednesday–Friday 10 am to 4 pm. The construction is expected to take 18 months. When completed the site will increase accessibility with a new elevator, new exhibits to tell the story of the building and Project C, and revitalize this historic landmark. InformationI-70 Closure in Downtown Topeka May Affect Travel to the Park

I-70 is closed through downtown Topeka between Topeka Boulevard and 8th Avenue due to construction. Visitors traveling to Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park should allow extra travel time and follow posted detours. Westbound visitors may continue on I-70 and follow signs to local exits near downtown Topeka. Eastbound visitors should use I-470 around Topeka, then connect to local streets to reach the park at 1515 SE Monroe Street. Check KanDrive.gov or call 511 for current road condition

The Wall Street side of the Navajo Loop will be closed Monday - Thursday from 6 AM to 12 Noon for critical trail stabilization work. The Two Bridges side of the Navajo Loop will remain open. This work will continue through the 2026 season.

Starting September 1, 2026, reservations will be required for all campsites at Kyles Landing and Erbie Campgrounds. Reservations must be made through Recreation.gov (www.recreation.gov) or by calling 877-444-6777. Reservations can be made the same day or up to six months in advance. Please note that cell phone service is unreliable in these areas, so it is strongly recommended to make your reservation before arriving at the campground.

The beachfront in front of Buxton Village is temporarily closed due to the presence of threatened oceanfront structures and Dare County's beach nourishment project. Renourished sections of beach will open to the public immediately after construction activities conclude in the areas, generally within 24 hours.

Public access is closed for 300 feet north and south of a groin repair project site in Buxton, as well as the adjacent ocean area to the east. Surfers, swimmers, and all other recreationists should stay at least 300 feet from the southernmost groin area for safety purposes.

The ferry dock servicing the Cape Lookout Lighthouse area is closed for repairs. Visitors will deboard the ferry in front of the lighthouse. To reach the boardwalk, visitors will need to walk 5–10 minutes on soft sand. Depending on the tide, visitors may also need to walk through water.

Stage II fire restrictions are in effect until further notice. Campfires including charcoal are not permitted, even in established fire rings. Smoking is only permitted within an enclosed vehicle. Gas or liquid fueled portable camp stoves are still permitted.

InformationReef Ride Bike Days 2026

For this special event in honor of National Public Lands Day, the Scenic Drive will be closed to motor vehicles for part of the day on Saturday, September 19 and Saturday, September 26, 2026. The road will be closed to vehicles from sunrise to 3 pm to allow for bicycles and pedestrians to enjoy the road at a more leisurely pace. The main road through the park (UT highway 24) - will remain open and unaffected by this closure.
